ernando Fernán-Gómez fue uno de los grandes representantes de la cultura española del siglo xx. En su amplia trayectoria destacó como actor, director, guionista de cine y televisión, dramaturgo, novelista y articulista.
Las bicicletas son para el verano refleja con maestría la cotidianidad de unos personajes que intentaron subsistir en circunstancias extremas, sin dejarse amedrentar. La historia los arrastró a una guerra cruenta, pero consiguieron sobrevivir refugiados en la intrahistoria.
Fernán-Gómez consideró que esta era su obra teatral más lograda. La proyectó con una mirada conciliadora que simboliza el espíritu democrático de la Transición. La pieza se estrenó en 1982 y logró gran éxito. Desde entonces no ha dejado de representarse ni de leerse y se ha convertido en un clásico contemporáneo.
